I'm Jerry Derevyanny.
In 2008, I started my career as a litigator in New York City at Kaye Scholer LLP (now a part of Arnold & Porter)
In 2012, I left to head up litigation at a Adler, Vermillion & Skocilich LLP - a Brooklyn, NY startup-focused firm
In 2014, I became general counsel of one of the largest adult-use cannabis companies in Washington State
From 2018 to 2020, I was an executive and general counsel of a publicly traded cannabis company
From 2020 to today, I have focused on investing in the cannabis industry as a partner at Bengal Capital. For those interested, we've written extensively on what we invest in and why on our Substack.
In 2026, I decided to re-open a law firm
My experience has straddled the business and legal in a rapidly evolving, highly regulated industry. Cannabis provided a platform to be exposed to, and learn, a wide variety of lessons - many more than I would have learned in working for so long in a stable industry.
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence now allow a lawyer like me to scale without hiring an associate - I can do far more varied work, far more efficiently.
So, practicing law is a lot more fun now than it was just a few years ago.
My business, legal, and investing exprience allows me to quarterback larger deals for clients - being a bridge between the client and a larger firm that smooths communication and focus to ultimately reduce overall legal expenses significantly
